Reggae Wednesdays w/ SEE-I live in Washington, DC

SEE-I REACHES 13 YEAR ANNIVERSARY FOR

ROCKERS INTERNATIONAL

REGGAE WEDNESDAYS AT THE EIGHTEENTH STREET LOUNGE

WASHINGTON, DC’S LEGENDARY REGGAE WEEKLY

PARTY BEGAN IN SPRING 2006

Washington, DC – If walls could talk, imagine the stories that the historic mansion at 1212 18th Street NW would tell. A turn of the century property that was originally in the Roosevelt family, it was here in 1995 that owner Farid Nouri opened the legendary Eighteenth Street Lounge with Eric Hilton. And it was in a studio in the back room of the lounge where Thievery Corporation was created, with both the group and club enjoying over two decades of success ever since. Rootz and Zeebo Steele, better known as See-I, were the first two vocalists of Thievery Corporation, and Nouri tapped them to start the Reggae Wednesdays party back in the Spring of 2006.

Fast forward 13 years and three presidential administrations later and the Reggae Wednesdays party hosted by See-I is going strong. As longtime fans of and heavily influenced by 1970’s dancehall reggae, the name Rockers International was chosen to embody their rudeboy spirit and the global nature of the Eighteenth Street Lounge. Over a decade later Reggae Wednesdays have become an institution of DC nightlife, with regulars and new inductees coming every week.

Rockers International started modestly, with a five piece band on the top floor jazz bar in the Red Room of the lounge. In that summer of 2006 the party moved to the rooftop deck and after that found its home in the larger Gold Room on the second floor. The party has been raging ever since, with the club making regular improvements to sound and lighting, and the band constantly evolving, growing and adding members. See-I now performs on Wednesdays with 10 or 11 pieces and several guest vocalists like Flex Mathews and Candice Mills.

The club is packed every Wednesday night as fans come to see the band perform and enjoy the world class DJs in the front room and the covered rooftop patio. Rockers International has garnered attention from music lovers, reggae fans and the well connected alike over the years, including a treasure trove of great photos and videos. Celebrities like Owen Wilson and Malcolm Jamal Warner have stopped by while international artists like Junior Marvin and Anoushka Shankar have sat in with the band. Overall it is the irresistible charisma of the singers combined with the dynamic musical fusion achieved on stage that keeps people coming back week after week to dance late into Wednesday night, not even worried about waking up early for work.
